A full day on the Anatolian side: the markets and cafés of Kadıköy and the elegant open-air shopping boulevard of Bağdat Street.
Kadıköy
Further south along the Bosphorus towards the Sea of Marmara, Kadıköy has developed into a lively area with up-market shopping, eating and entertainment, making it popular especially with locals. Once prominent in the history of Christianity, the 5th century hosted important council meetings here. It is one of the most improved districts of Istanbul over the last century, and a fashionable area to promenade along the waterfront in the evenings, especially around the Kalamış marina and the Sahilyolu between Fenerbahçe and Bostancı.
Kadıköy Market & Bahariye
Walk through the narrow streets of the Kadıköy market, a nice and cosy place full of small shops. From Altıyol Square take the road uphill: Bahariye Street is closed to car traffic and only a tram rides there, with many budget shops and pleasant cafés. Look for Sanatçılar Sokağı, a small open-air market where handmade goods and fine silverware are sold.
Bağdat Street
Bağdat Caddesi is the most famous street of the Asian side — a one-way boulevard full of shopping malls, restaurants, coffee shops, elegant stores, luxury car dealers and banks, a little like a narrower Champs-Élysées. All the famous brands have their shops here alongside smaller stores with very reasonable prices, and many people simply call it a big open-air shopping mall.
